An Important Note on Bloom Form:
Zinnias grown from seed can produce single, semi-double, and fully double blooms within the same packet, even from varieties selected for double flowers. This is a natural characteristic of seed-grown zinnias and not a reflection of seed quality. This is true of all zinnias, regardless of supplier, with the exception of Benary's Giant which has a tendency to provide consistent double blooming flowers which is why it was selectively bred for this reason.
A few things that encourage more fully double blooms: deadhead consistently and early, removing spent flowers before they go to seed, as this signals the plant to keep producing its best blooms rather than putting energy into seed development. Pinching the central growing tip when plants are young (around 6-8 inches tall) encourages more branching and more flower stems, which tends to result in more double blooms overall. Consistent fertilizing with a bloom-boosting fertilizer (higher middle number, such as 5-10-5) also encourages fuller, more layered flowers. Plants that receive less than 6-8 hours of full sun daily are also more likely to produce single or semi-double blooms, so full sun is non-negotiable for the best double flower production. Finally, the first blooms of the season are often single or semi-double while the plant is establishing, with fuller double blooms typically appearing as the season progresses and the plant matures.
