Grow your own Luffa sponges!

Many people don’t know that luffa is also edible when the gourds are small and tender. The taste is mild and slightly sweet, similar texture to zucchini.

Luffa is in the gourd family. What an amazing planet we live in where we can grow sponges and birdhouses out of vegetables!

When allowed to mature, luffa gets quite large, at 2 feet long and the inside becomes spongy. The fruit can easily be skinned to expose the inner sponge and can be cut into large pieces for bathing or small pieces, suspended in soap. I love that look and a built in sponge to boot. You just made luffa, go make some soap too!

Luffa is an impressive vine that requires a trellis. Having them grow overhead makes for quite the display.
