The double blue-purple flowers of the butterfly pea are a sight to see. Quite a rare plant to find, most people have only been able to find them by trading.

The dried flowers have recently been in the spotlight for making a beautiful bluish purple tea.

In India, it is revered as a holy flower, with the flowers having a resemblance to female genitalia, hence the Latin botanical name of genus, Clitoria, from clitoris.

The flowers are edible and are used in some countries to dye food. When mixed with honey and lemon, it changes the ph of the tea, making it a pinkish purple color. This drink is commonly served in spas.

The flowers have more recently been used in gin. When mixed with tonic water, the drink turns pink.

The flowers are rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, (the antioxidants found in blueberries) which give it it’s blue hue.

The tea is said to be a mood enchanter, decreasing anxiety whilst also increasing energy and productivity. It is also said to be good for hair and nail growth and health.
