Poke Milkweed is a US Native that is found primarily in the Eastern US and Canada. It has beautiful bountiful blossoms that delicately dangle. You may come across this gem while in the woods, near riverbanks as they like moist soil. These are hosts to the Monarch as well as a variety of other native butterflies. A very beneficial milkweed to plant if you are in a cooler climate.

Another impressive feature of this plant is its' size, reaching heights of up to 6 feet. Lots of leaves for those Monarch caterpillars!

These need cold stratification to germinate. They either need 30 days of less than 45 degree weather outdoors or you can store the seeds in a moist paper towel and sealed in a plastic baggie and placed in your refrigerator for one month. This is needed in very warm climates or for any climate when planting at a warmer time of year.

Perennial zones 4-7

Please note that the sap of this plant can cause skin sensitivities in some people. You should always wash your hands after handling milk weed.
