Sesbania Grandiflora, Edible Flowers, Pods and Leaves
10 Seeds
The much rarer red version of the Hummingbird Tree! This is a small tree that only gets 6-15 feet tall (smaller in containers.) It produces beautiful clusters of red pods that look like little birds. As they mature, the bird-like flowers spread out slightly, where individual petals can be seen.
Sesbania is in the legume family and are referred to as "nitrogen fixers." Meaning that rather than depleting the soil, the actually absorb nitrogen from the air and return it to the soil by way of organic matter. The soil around the tree becomes more enriched, making this ideal for planting smaller plants or flowers around the base.
The flowers, pods and leaves are all edible and regularly used in cuisine in SE Asia. These thrive in warm climates such as parts of Asia and India. The leaves are unusually high in protein for plants.
Perennial zones 9-12. Any zone indoors, Because of their smaller size (particularly when container kept,) these can be brought indoors in winter.
These need to be around 80 degrees for germination (absolute minimum of 77 degrees) A heat mat for indoor sowing is highly encouraged if these temperatures are not available outdoors.
