This is a tree with a long and beautiful history. A sacred fig or Ficus Religiosa is the very tree that Buddha sat under when he has his visions. The tree has been worshipped ever since.

In Thailand, they wrap scarves, ribbons and sashes around the trees as a means of wrapping a personal belonging to the tree to create a connection. They are often kept as bonsai in an area of the home that is dedicated to worship.

Although sacred figs can be planted in the ground, the roots are massive and can spread several yards in every direction. They are related to the banyan, strangler fig and other such ficus that are know for their impressive roots that seems to engulf everything around them. Truly an impressive tree. If you want to plant one in the ground, be sure to plant it far away from any plumbing or house foundation.

The leaves on the particular ficus are the most beautiful in my opinion, are typically larger than ficus benjamina and other figs and the leaves are heart shaped with a pointed end. What is most impressive is that new leaves start out pink or red, are very tender and slowly turn a bright spring green and then a rich deep green. I have one of these very happily growing in a southern facing window. Its roots are already making their way above the soil and moss foundation which is one of the beautiful attributes of this tree. It grows fast, making for a bonsai that it looks like you have been growing for years. The plant can be controlled by regular pruning of both the branches and roots, just be sure not to trim the main tap root (the largest, central and most obvious.) Trimming will keep the plant bushier and more attractive.

Germination is slow at 4-6 weeks. Heat helps speed up germination. Minimum temperature of 77 degrees. I strongly suggest a heat mat for plants. Cover pots with plastic wrap to retain moisture and warmth.
