Masterwort, Hattie’s Pincushion
20 seeds
‘Primadonna’ Astrantia major in a deep pink, almost red. I first discovered these at my local Florist and used them in my smudge bundles, they dry SO perfectly!
They make for an excellent cut flower and I still have some dried ones that are a few years old and still look nearly like they did when fresh.
Obviously a beautiful flower in your garden as well, where you can grow them by the dozens.
Astrantia is a cool climate plant and likes part sun and moist soils rich in organic matter.
Seeds can be planted in fall for a sowing emergence or cold stratified in your refrigerator for 6 weeks. These take some patience as they can take anywhere from 1-6 months to germinate. Don’t throw out the pot or give up, they will come up with time. Just make sure the soil stays moist.
Grows up to 3 feet tall and 18 inches wide
Perennial zones 4-7, some sources say up to 9.
