Grow your own sugar cane for sugar, simple syrup, juicing or the inner canes can be chewed on for a sweet treat. Or, just admire its' beauty! Sugar cane reminds me of bamboo's shorter and controllable cousin. It spreads via underground rhizomes with beautiful canes. Colors can vary based on lighting conditions. The seeds are orange and look a little like millet or quinoa.

Sugar cane likes slightly acidic soil and moist conditions. The seeds are easy to grow but do need warmth. 80 degrees is the minimum temperature. 85 degrees or warmer is ideal. This can easily be achieved with a heat mat if temps are not warm enough outdoors.

Perennial zones 9 and up. Can be container grown indoors with adequate lighting.
