A very beneficial US native. This plant is native to the majority of the Eastern United Stated and is a host for butterflies, attracts bees and hummingbirds.

Perennial zones 4-10

Many sources say no warmer than zone 9, but this plant is sold in native nurseries in zone 10 and my plants are doing extremely well. They are very versatile, handling both heat and cold. These will grow year round in warm climates and return every sowing in cold climates.

These can be planted in fall for a spring emergence or cold stratified in your refrigerator for 60 days, by folding the seeds into a moist paper towel and then a sealed plastic bag and placing them in your refrigerator. After 60 days, plant when all danger of frost had passed.
