Physalis Ixocarpa Seeds, Salsa Verde
25 seeds
Tomatillos are husk tomatoes in the same family as ground cherries but slightly larger.
Tomatillos are typically green, this is the rare purple version that is the secret ingredient to salsa violeta! This make for a slightly sweeter salsa verde, a must try. Adding a little heat makes for my two wonderful sensations, sweet heat! Most purple tomatillos are purple on the outside and green on the inside, these are purple straight through!
Because of their sweetness, they are also used to make jams and sauces by adding some sugar.
They have a slightly less tart taste with hints of citrus, plum and pear.
The plant itself is also unusual with purple veins on both the stems and the outer husk.
These are a perennial in zones 9B+. They are commonly grown as an annual and easily re-seed. Grow any time of year in warmer climates and summer in cooler climates. Matured in only 80 days.

Plant when temperatures are above 55 degrees. Plant in full sun. These can be grown in 5 gallon pots with premium potting soil or directly in the ground. For planting in the ground, prepare a bed by clearing an area of weeds and digging a few inches down into the soil and replacing it with a good garden soil, organic compost, manure or a mix of all of these. Thoroughly wet the area before planting. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and 18-24 inches apart in rows that are 2-3 feet apart.
Water daily until they sprout and then water as needed. You can also start these in starter pots which will help to control moisture and then transplant them where desired. Fertilize with a vegetable fertilizer. The seeds will sprout in 1-2 weeks and are ready for harvest in 80+ days. These can be kept in pots and brought indoors in winter in colder climates or greenhouse kept or they can be grown outdoors as an annual. In warmer climates, these can be planted outdoors year round.
A NOTE ON SEED STORAGE:
If your temperatures are not quite right for planting, you can keep the seeds viable by keeping them in the plastic bag that I send them in (which is thick and food grade for specifically this purpose,) place that in a paper bag to block light and put it in your refrigerator until you are ready to plant. This can be done with most all seeds and will keep them viable for 1-5 years depending on the species. If you have a basement, you can store them there as well. A sealed mason jar in a paper bag is also ideal. They key for seed storage is cool, dark and dry.
