Althaea Officinalis, Edible Plants
50 seeds
The original Marshmallow! We’ve all associated this term with the yummy sticky treat, but did you know that the name originates from “Mallow” referring to the plant (a member of the hibiscus family) and “Marsh” referring to the plants preferred growing conditions.
Marsh Mallows like moist soil and need a fairly short period of cold to break dormancy. This can be done by planting when temperatures are at or below 45 degrees or you can cold stratify the seeds in your refrigerator for 30-45 days.
The roots can be used to make the sticky consistency of marshmallows with some added sugar.
The flowers are beautiful pinkish white, reminiscent of hibiscus.
Perennial that returns every spring.
