Elders report that Native Americans chewed the roots and then blew it on their hands and handled rattlesnakes with no consequence. This is where the famous name of this plant arose.
This is a very beneficial US native that will attract many pollinators and is deer and rabbit resistant.
It also has a long history of medicinal use.
The roots were also used to make rope and string.
The shoots and roots were eaten and cooked.
