These are what you may have seen in the specialty grocery stores! The Golden Berry Gigante (Physalis peruviana), also known as Cape gooseberry or Peruvian groundcherry, is a larger-fruited variety of the goldenberry plant. This perennial in warm climates is native to the Andes of South America and is prized for its tangy, sweet fruit encased in papery husks. Here's more about it:

Growth and Appearance
Golden Berry Gigante grows as a bushy, sprawling plant that can reach heights and widths of 3–5 feet. Its leaves are soft, heart-shaped, and slightly hairy. The plant produces small, yellow, star-shaped flowers that give way to its signature fruit.

The berries are golden-yellow to orange when ripe, encased in a papery husk that turns light brown as the fruit matures. The Gigante variety produces notably larger fruit compared to standard goldenberries. The flavor is a unique combination of tropical sweetness and tartness, often described as a mix of pineapple, mango, and citrus.

Hardy in USDA zones 8–11 but often grown as an annual in cooler climates or it can be brought indoors. It is frost-sensitive.

The fruit is ready to harvest when the husks turn light brown and dry. Typically, the berries fall off the plant when fully ripe. The husks protect the fruit and allow it to store well for weeks if kept in a cool, dry place.
