Gold Leaf Leycesteria formosa, commonly known as Golden Himalayan Honeysuckle, is a vibrant and ornamental shrub that stands out for its golden-yellow foliage, brilliant red to deep purple bracts with dangling clusters of tubular white flowers that have a light and pleasant fragrance.
The bright leaves create a striking contrast in gardens, with the color intensifying in full sun and showing lime-green hues in partial shade. The blooms are followed by dark purple or black berries that are sweet and edible, described as having a caramel-like flavor. Birds are particularly drawn to the berries, making this shrub a favorite for wildlife gardens.
It grows to 4–6 feet tall and spreads 3–4 feet wide, forming an upright, bushy habit. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soil, although it tolerates a variety of soil types. While moderately drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from regular watering for optimal growth.
Perennial zones 7–9, it does well in temperate climates with mild winters.
Cold stratification is not always necessary, but can improve germination rates. Seeds can sown in fall/winter for a spring emergence, or cold stratified in your refrigerator for 4-6 weeks. To artificially cold stratify, fold the seeds into a moist paper towel and seal in a ziploc bag then place in your refrigerator for 4-6 weeks. then sow when temperatures are between 65 and 75 degrees.
