Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana, commonly known as mountain big sagebrush, is a subspecies of big sagebrush and is native to the western United States. It is an essential component of many upland ecosystems, particularly in higher elevation sagebrush steppe habitats. This perennial, woody shrub is known for its aromatic foliage, ecological importance, and adaptability to harsh conditions.
It grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet, with a spreading, rounded form. Its small, wedge-shaped leaves are gray-green to blue, covered in fine hairs, and feature three distinct lobes at the tip—hence the species name tridentata ("three-toothed"). The plant produces small, inconspicuous yellowish flowers in late summer to fall. The seeds are tiny and dispersed by wind.
It thrives in higher elevations (4,500 to 10,000 feet) and cooler, moister climates compared to other big sagebrush varieties. It is highly drought tolerant, due to its extensive root system, which can reach water deep in the soil. Its silvery, hairy leaves reduce water loss and reflect sunlight, helping it survive in arid and semi-arid environments.
It provides critical habitat and food for many mammals, which forage on its foliage in winter.
It is especially vital for the greater sage-grouse, which relies on sagebrush for cover, nesting sites, and a primary food source.
It has a deep root system, which helps prevent erosion and improves soil health. It is widely used for restoration projects due to habitat loss from fire and human activity.
Indigenous peoples used sagebrush for medicinal purposes, making teas or poultices from its leaves.
It is specifically native to the following states:
California
Colorado
Idaho
Montana
Nebraska
Nevada
New Mexico
Oregon
Utah
Washington
Wyoming
These need cold stratification to germinate. The seeds can be sown outdoors in fall or winter or fold the seeds in a damp paper towel and seal them in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 4–6 weeks. Then sow outdoors when temperatures are between 60 and 75 degrees.
Some seeds may germinate without cold stratification but this is not guaranteed.
Perennial zones 4-7
This is for approx 3000 seeds (measured by volume) Please note that these seeds are very tiny.
