A native yucca to the Mojave desert, which includes Arizona, Nevada, Utah and parts of California, the Joshua tree grows well in very arid climates in growing zones 6-8B It has grown in these areas for the past 2.5 million years.
The blooms appear in spring and are spectacular, covering the whole tree in huge white blooms that are 8-20 inches long.
As you can imagine, it is very drought tolerant.
The trees were named by Mormons in the 1850s, who saw their gnarled branches in the arms of Joshua pointing to the promised land. They are very distinctive and make for an amazing focal point in any dry landscape.
They can grow from 20 to 70 feet in height but generally reach no larger than 40 feet tall
