Clematis viticella, commonly known as the Italian Clematis or Purple Clematis, is a stunning climbing vine belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. This deciduous plant is renowned for its profusion of eye-catching, bell-shaped flowers and elegant, twining stems.

Clematis viticella grows to a height of 8 to 12 feet and has a vigorous, climbing habit. Its dark green, pinnate leaves provide an attractive backdrop to the abundant blooms. The flowers are small to medium-sized, ranging in color from deep purple to violet. These charming, nodding flowers bloom from late spring to early autumn, adding a splash of color to gardens and trellises.

The seeds require a 60 day period of cold to break dormancy. They can be planted in fall/winter for a spring emergence or cold stratified in your refrigerator for 60 days - soak seeds in water for 24 hours, fold them into a moist paper towel, and then seal them in a Ziploc bag and place in your refrigerator for 60 days.
