Camellia Sinensis has a very long and rich history, being the original and current leaves of the plant where black, green, white and oolong tea come from. The difference in these teas is not in the plant, but how it the leaves are processed. Growing this plant, gives you the ability to make any of these teas.

Simply referred to as the "Tea Plant," it is hardy from zones 7-9. It prefers a mild cold spell to perform best but will not survive in regions cooler than zone 7. The plants can live for many years.

The seeds are large and need to be soaked in hot tap water for 24 hours, followed by cold-moist stratification which can be achieved by either sowing in fall for a spring emergence, or sowing into small flats or pots. After soaking the seeds, prepare the flats or pots with soil and water, plant the seeds and place the flats or pots into a sealed ziploc bag and put them in your refrigerator for 60 days. Then place outside in sunlight when temps are between 65-75 degrees.

You are probably familiar with other members of the family of this plant, Camellia's which come in a variety of beautiful colors. This flowers as well and they have the traditional camellia appearance and are white.

Plants can be grown as a small tree or shrub, if allowed, they can reach heights of 10-15 feet and 6-10 feet wide. Leaves quickly regenerate from harvests.
