Artemisia californica, commonly known as California sagebrush or "cowboy cologne," is a perennial shrub native to the coastal scrub and chaparral ecosystems of California and Baja California. It is native to California only.  It is a member of the Asteraceae family and is highly adapted to the arid Mediterranean climate of its range, thriving in dry, sandy, or any well-draining soil.
 
It grows to a height of 2 to 5 feet and spreads in a rounded, airy form. Its slender, silvery-green leaves are highly aromatic, especially when crushed, emitting a distinct, sage-like fragrance, where the name "cowboy cologne," is derived. The foliage is finely divided, giving the plant a soft, feathery appearance. During late summer to fall, the plant produces small, yellow flowers, which wind-pollinated, therefore not requiring pollinators (although pollinators will pollinate it as well.) 
 
Artemisia californica plays a crucial role in its native habitats. It provides cover and nesting sites for birds, as well as food and habitat for various insects, including pollinators. It is also a key component of the coastal sage scrub community, often growing alongside other native species like black sage (Salvia mellifera), white sage (Salvia apiana), and coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis).
 
California sagebrush is drought-tolerant and well-suited for xeriscaping, native landscaping, and restoration projects. Its aromatic leaves have traditional uses in Native American cultures for medicinal and ceremonial purposes. It has been used as a smudge herb, an insect repellent, and in teas.
 
Though hardy and resilient, Artemisia californica faces threats from habitat loss due to urbanization, wildfires and invasive species. Its conservation is vital for maintaining the biodiversity and ecological health of coastal sage scrub ecosystems.
