This is such a fun melon to grow, also great for a kids garden, along with the cucamelon.
The Queen Anne's Pocket Melon, also known as pomegranate melon, or vine peach, is a fascinating heirloom melon, prized for its fragrance, that is highly intense, even uncut.
It's name originates from its association with the Victorian period and European aristocracy. The fruits were used in bowls and baskets as a natural air freshener with their sweet, perfume like scent and carried in pockets as a perfume, before the invention of deodorant. That is how intense this highly fragrant melon is! Both beautiful and aromatic.
The fruit is small, about the size of a peach or tennis ball (2–4 inches in diameter).
It has a striped or mottled pattern with colors ranging from yellow to orange and red.
The skin is smooth or slightly ribbed, with an eye-catching ornamental quality.
The flesh is edible and mildly sweet, making it suitable as a savory accompaniment to non-sweet dishes, such as salads. Many people put salt on it and toss it in a salad with feta and bacon. It can also be used in fruit salads. The flesh is white to pale yellow. When you eat it, you can smell it, which almost feels as if it tastes like the smell. It is really something you have to experience for yourself to understand it. I urge you to try it!
It is also often grown to preserve the very cool historical significance of this plant. Growing it, is like growing a piece of history.
