Getting a late start or looking for a fall or winter harvest? This is one of many varieties that can be planted late. These even retain their color when cooked!
A stunning purple, nearly black variety. If you don't like brussels sprouts, you just may like these! They contain anthocyanins, the antioxidants found in blueberries and red wine that give them their purple hue. This is also responsible for their sweeter taste.
These require some patience as they take 90 days to harvest but good news is that they can handle light frost and actually taste much better after a few light frosts, this also makes them sweeter.
If you've never seen brussels sprouts growing they are amazing! They grow on long stalks and the "sprouts," that look like little miniature purplish-black cabbages grow all along the stalk.
Plant when temperatures are between 50-75 for best results. 85 is the maximum temperature for germination.
These are a great late season crop for planting in late summer to fall in cooler climates and late fall and winter in warmer climates. Some people grow them for their leaves which are a gorgeous deep purple and extremely nutritious. Young leaving can be eaten fresh, larger leaves can be steamed or roasted.
They prefer a slightly acidic soil so adding peat moss is helpful.
They grow to about 3 feet tall.
Harvest in 90 days.
