These plants are very important for stabilizing coastal ecosystems due to their ability to tolerate salty environments. It provides habitat and food for various wildlife, including insects and birds. It is a native to Florida and other coastal areas of states in zones 9 to 11.

I have to admit that for as long as I have been gardening and living in Florida all my life, I only came across this plant for the first time in the spring of 2023, about 6 months after Hurricane Ian nearly decimated Sanibel Island as well as many surrounding areas, including mine, in Fort Myers. Having spent every summer there, it took me some time to prepare myself to go look at it.

Aside from all the downed trees and devastated buildings, I found this stunning plant all around, as if it was rising from the ashes. Along with it, was Dune Sunflower. I collected a very small amount of seeds (only enough for myself) as I did not want to take from an area that was trying to rebuild. This was so abundant that I felt ok with that. I grew the plants from those seeds and these are the offspring of the seeds of the plants I grew.

These are very salt tolerant, which makes sense as to why they were one of the first to return. What is interesting though is that I had never seen them in the area that they were growing, they must have blown in.

Their flowers are a lovely rose shade and almost fuzzy. When you brush by them, they give off a camphor like smell that I absolutely love. Which is why it is referred to as camphorweed.
