This has been such a joy to grow. The pads are more like a turquoise color that slowly graduate to purple. Opuntia or Prickly Pear Cactus seeds are one of the easiest cacti to grow. When it comes to many of the brilliantly colored cacti or succulents, many of the colors you see are more vibrant when the plant is exposed to cold. I was pleasantly surprised to find this particular species holds its color even in the warmer times of the year. The standard purple prickly pear cacti that I grow tends to stay more green while my Santa Rita has continued to show off her beautiful hues, even in the hottest of Florida summers. 
 
Perennial zones 7-13, can easily be brought indoors in winter in colder zones. It will tolerate cooler indoor temps very well, although it does appreciate strong sunlight from a preferably southern or western facing window or a grow light.
