Blue fescue is a striking ornamental grass known for its attractive blue-gray foliage and compact size. It forms dense, tufted clumps of fine-textured foliage. The foliage is narrow, linear, and arching, with a distinct blue-gray coloration. The leaves are usually around 6-10 inches long.
As the name suggests, the foliage of blue fescue is its most distinctive feature, with a blue-gray hue that
can vary slightly depending on the cultivar and environmental conditions.
It is is a relatively low-growing grass, usually reaching heights of around 6-12 inches and spreading about the same width.
In summer, blue fescue produces inconspicuous flowers on slender stems that rise above the foliage. While the flowers are not particularly showy, they add a delicate, airy quality to the plant.
It is low-maintenance and thrives in well-drained soil. It prefers full sun but can tolerate some light shade. This grass is drought-tolerant once established and generally requires little supplemental watering.
Blue Fescue is commonly used in landscaping as a border or edging plant, in mass plantings for ground cover, or in rock gardens and container gardens for its unique color and texture. It also pairs well with other ornamental grasses and perennials in mixed plantings.
Blue Fescue prefers full sun but can tolerate part sun. Please note though, that sunlight brings out the blue hues. The grass will be more of a green-blue in partial sun.
