Fragrant Carpet is a compact hummingbird mint mix that fills the garden with color and a minty, licorice-anise scent. Crush a leaf between your fingers and you will smell it right away. The foliage grows into a tidy, aromatic mound, and the flower spikes come in a soft pastel mix of pink, rose, lilac, tangerine, and lemon yellow.
The blooms start in the first year from seed and keep coming from midsummer into fall. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees visit them constantly, and deer and rabbits tend to leave the aromatic leaves alone. At just 12 to 18 inches tall and about 12 inches wide, Fragrant Carpet is a great choice for the front of a border, pots, patio containers, rock gardens, and edging along a path. It loves full sun and heat, tolerates dry spells and poor soil once established, and does best in well-drained soil. Cut the flowers for bouquets, or use the leaves for tea.
Perennial zones 5 to 9.
Growing tips: Seeds need light to germinate. Press them onto the surface of moist seed-starting mix and do not cover them. Keep the soil at 60 to 70°F and evenly moist, and expect sprouts within 2 to 4 weeks. Start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost, or sow outdoors once the soil has warmed. Space plants 9 to 12 inches apart.
