Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis) is a perennial bunchgrass native to the western United States and parts of Canada. It is well-adapted to arid and semi-arid climates, thriving in prairies, grasslands, open woodlands, and mountainous areas.

It has a fine tufted growth habit, where it grows in dense clumps, ranging in shades of blue and green, depending on the time of year and growing conditions. It grows 1-2 feet tall, with flower stalks that reach 3 feet tall in late spring and early summer.

It has become very popular for restoration projects and erosion control, where its deep tap roots are very beneficial, particularly on slopes. It is prized for its drought tolerance and adaptation to growing in poor, rocky soil. It make for a fantastic choice for xeriscaping projects.

Its seeds are a food source for native wildlife.

It is native to the following states:
Arizona
California
Colorado
Idaho
Nevada
New Mexico
Oregon
South Dakota
Utah
Washington
Wyoming

Perennial zones 4-7

Exposing the seeds to cold can improve germination, but this is not always necessary. To do so, plant the seeds in fall for s spring germination or fold the seeds into a moist paper towel and seal them in a ziploc bag for 2-4 weeks, then sow as normal.
