A very beneficial native wildflower, Indian paintbrush is an eye-catcher. You cannot miss this plant. Can handle drought. It's common names are Texas Indian Paintbrush, Red Paintbrush, Scarlet Paintbrush, Entireleaf Indian Paintbrush and just Indian Paintbrush.
Native to Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas, this particular variety is showier than some of the other Castillejas.
Castilleja indivisa seeds typically require cold stratification to improve germination rates. A cold period of about 30 to 60 days at temperatures around 32°F to 40°F is recommended to mimic winter conditions. After stratification, the seeds can be sown in a suitable medium for germination.
Like other Castilleja species, it is a hemi-parasite, meaning it derives some of its nutrients by attaching its roots to other plants. This parasitic relationship helps it thrive in nutrient-poor soils. It is best to plant them with host plants. Unlike some other species, Indian Paintbrush does not harm the host plants. This nature does not seem to harm their hosts as they do not overtake the other plants, they just use water or nutrients from other plants, if needed. For best results and to mimic their natural environment, please see below for some examples of good host plants:
Coreopsis
Echinacea
Other Paintbrush species (interestingly, they will share nutrients and water.)
Grows 6-16 inches tall
Biennial that tends to return from seed as well. Zones 6-11
This is for 50 seeds.
