The Jenny Lind melon is an heirloom variety of Cucumis melo that dates back to the 1840s and is named after the famous Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind, also known as the "Swedish Nightingale." This melon was popular in the 19th century and is making a resurgence.
Jenny Lind melons are small, typically weighing around 1 to 2 pounds each. They are known for their distinctive appearance, with a slightly flattened shape and a unique knob or turban-like protrusion on the blossom end. The skin is netted, similar to cantaloupes, with greenish-yellow tones as it ripens. Inside, the flesh is pale green, that approaches a salmon color, around the seeds. It is juicy, and sweet, with a delicate flavor that sets it apart from other melons.
This variety is well-suited to home gardens due to its compact size and manageable growth habits. It thrives in warm climates with well-drained soil and requires plenty of sunlight. Like other melons, it is a warm-season crop that should be planted after the danger of frost has passed. The Jenny Lind melon matures in about 70–80 days, making it a relatively quick-producing heirloom fruit.
