Climbing Snapdragon Vine — 'Joan Loraine' (Asarina scandens)
Also known as twining snapdragon or chickabiddy, Asarina scandens 'Joan Loraine' is a fast-growing, free-flowering vine native to the rocky slopes and woodlands of Mexico. This particular variety is prized for its rich, velvety violet-purple, trumpet-shaped blooms with contrasting white throats, each flower nearly 2 inches wide, set against delicate, arrow-shaped emerald-green foliage that belies a surprisingly tough, vigorous plant.
A true twining climber, 'Joan Loraine' will happily scramble up trellises, fences, obelisks, or other supports, reaching impressive heights of 6-10+ feet in a single season. It's equally at home cascading from a hanging basket or trailing over the edge of a container, making it a versatile choice for patios, pergolas, and vertical garden features.
