JUJUBE
Ziziphus jujuba
Ziziphus jujuba is a deciduous small tree or large shrub native to temperate and subtropical regions of China, now cultivated across Central Asia, the Mediterranean, and beyond for its edible fruit. The tree carries glossy, ovate leaves on arching branches armed with small spines, and in late summer produces clusters of smooth, date-like fruits that ripen from green to deep mahogany-red. The flesh is crisp and sweet when fresh, drying to a chewy, caramel-rich concentrate on the branch. Hardy, drought-tolerant once established, and patient with poor soils, jujube is a rewarding long-term addition to an edible landscape.
