Midnight Garden Hellebore Mix (Helleborus orientalis)
For gardeners who love drama, depth, and the unexpected, the Midnight Garden Mix delivers. This stunning Helleborus orientalis seed strain produces a brooding, richly atmospheric collection of blooms in deep velvety black, royal purple, soft lavender, and luminous pale tones with chartreuse and ivory undertones, many featuring intricate bicolor patterning, interior spotting, and contrasting golden stamens that seem to glow against the dark petals.
Like all Helleborus orientalis, these are among the earliest perennials to bloom, pushing their nodding, cup-shaped flowers up through late winter and early spring, often while frost still lingers and continuing to perform for an impressive 8-10 weeks. Mature plants often produce 50 or more flowers per plant lasting up to 2 months, making them one of the longest-blooming shade perennials available.
Lush, evergreen clumps of deep green, leathery foliage provide year-round structure and interest, making this as much a foliage plant as a flowering one. Utterly at home in woodland gardens, shady borders, under deciduous trees, or alongside hostas, ferns, and astilbes and completely ignored by deer.

Helleborus orientalis seeds have complex dormancy requirements, patience is essential, but the reward is absolutely worth it. The easiest way is to plant them outdoors in fall where they can experience a warm period followed by cold. Alternatively, you can mimic these conditions by doing the following:
Warm phase 1: Sow just below the soil surface and keep at room temperature for 6 weeks
Cold phase 1: Cover with plastic wrap to retain moisture, refrigerate for 8 weeks
Warm phase 2: Move to a cool room (54°F/12°C) for 8 weeks, germination may begin here
Cold phase 2 (if needed): If no germination yet, refrigerate again for 6-8 weeks, then return to cool room
A second cold period is completely normal for this species, do not discard ungerminated pots. Germination typically occurs 30-90 days after the final warming period. Keep soil consistently moist throughout and never allow it to dry out completely.
