RED RASPBERRY

Rubus idaeus is a deciduous, suckering shrub native to Europe and northern Asia, widely naturalized across temperate North America. It produces arching canes that fruit on second-year wood, with soft, pinnate leaves that are silver-white on their undersides. The berries ripen to a deep red in midsummer, sweet and fragrant, and the flowers attract bees reliably. Grown from seed, plants take longer to establish than vegetatively propagated stock but develop strong, genetically diverse root systems well suited to the home garden hedgerow or kitchen garden edge.
