Climbing Snapdragon Vine, Rose (Asarina scandens)
Also known as twining snapdragon or chickabiddy, Asarina scandens is a fast-growing, free-flowering vine native to the rocky slopes and woodlands of Mexico. This rose variety is prized for its soft, romantic rose-pink, trumpet-shaped blooms, each flower nearly 2 inches wide, set against delicate, arrow-shaped emerald-green foliage that belies a surprisingly tough, vigorous plant.
A true twining climber, it will happily scramble up trellises, fences, obelisks, or other supports, reaching impressive heights of 6 to 10+ feet in a single season. It is equally at home cascading from a hanging basket or trailing over the edge of a container, making it a versatile choice for patios, pergolas, and vertical garden features. Blooms appear from early summer and continue right up until frost, drawing in bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds throughout the season.
Grown as a tender perennial in zones 9 to 13, it’s just as commonly treated as a fast, showy annual in cooler climates, since it flowers quickly from seed and rewards gardeners with months of continuous color regardless of whether it survives the winter.
Quick growing facts:
Sow seeds at 64 to 68°F, germinates in about 3 weeks
Full sun to partial shade (afternoon shade in hot climates)
Moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil
Height: 6 to 10 ft (climbing/twining) | Spread: 3 to 5 ft
Short-lived (2 to 4 years) perennial in zones 9 to 13, grown as annual elsewhere
Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds
