Bell shaped pendant, checkerboard bells in smoky plum, mauve, and the occasional clean white nod over slender stems, bringing fairytale energy to damp lawns, ditches, and woodland edges. This bulbous perennial naturalizes politely, disappears by early summer, and pops back every spring right where you wanted that soft, wild look. Early pollinators approve, deer and rodents usually pass.
Snake's Head Frittilary, also known as Checkered Lily, naturalizes in moist spring soils , thrives in sun to part shade, is deer and rodent resistant and gives you that cottage-meadow vibe without trying too hard.
Grows 8–12" tall
Blooms all through April and May, perfect for Easter, prefers sun to part shade, seeds turn into bulbs and return spring after spring, will self-sow where happy.
Sow in fall outdoors where winter cold can work on the seed, or mimic winter by cold-stratifying sealed, barely moist seed for 12–16 weeks in the fridge, then sow just at the surface in a gritty, humus-rich mix and keep evenly moist at cool temps (50–60°F). Germination is slow and may stagger over more than one spring. Seedlings look like fine grass; grow on in pots or a nursery bed for 2–3 seasons, keeping them moist in spring and allowing a drier summer rest. Avoid disturbing young bulbs. Expect first flowers in about 3–5 years—totally worth the wait for those checkerboard bells and they will come back for years to come.
Design tips: weave through short grasses, primroses, muscari, small narcissus, and violets; let lawns go “no-mow spring” to enjoy the show.
