Kids love these along with the cucamelons. So fun! The “burrs,” are actually very soft.
The West Indian gherkin cucumber, also known as the West Indian burr gherkin or West Indian gherkin melon, is a small, heirloom cucumber variety native to West Africa and widely grown in the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of South America. Despite its name, it's not a true cucumber but rather a member of the Cucurbitaceae family, related to melons and cucumbers.
This cucumber variety produces small, prickly fruits that resemble tiny watermelons or cucumbers, typically measuring around 1 to 3 inches in length. When ripe, the fruits turn yellow-orange and develop a sweet, slightly tangy flavor. West Indian gherkins are often used in pickling due to their crisp texture and unique taste, but they can also be eaten fresh in salads or used as a garnish.
The vines of West Indian gherkin cucumbers are vigorous growers and can sprawl or climb if given support. They are generally heat-tolerant and can thrive in warm climates with well-drained soil and full sun. They will return as a perennial in zones 10-13, but are typically grown as an annual at warm times of the year, all over the world, as the growth is vigorous and harvest is quick at 55-65 days.
