There are two major types of Lemongrass, West Indian and East Indian. The most commonly found seeds are for East Indian, Cymbopogon Flexuosus. Both plants are edible but the Cymbopogon Citratus (West Indian Lemon grass) is much more palatable. It’s the kind that can be sliced and used directly in soups, teas or cuisine, in that form. East Indian is very chewy and needs to be mashed to make a paste to make it palatable. Lemongrass is also a natural mosquito repellent as it is a member of the citronella family. It is more effective than traditional citronella in my opinion and can be planted in a gathering area to keep the bugs away!
This is for West Indian Lemon grass seed from my personal organically grown plants.
To harvest Lemongrass, do not pull it up but rather cut it at the base so it can easily regrow. The bases look similar to scallions. Just a few shoots go a long way.
Lemongrass has a long history of medicinal use.
In can be used in teas (I personally like to braid it, dry it and snip off pieces as needed), soups or cuisine.
It has a delightful lemony scent and taste.
These require warm and humid conditions to sprout. Temperatures should be 70 degrees or above. If you live in a cooler climate, you can start the seeds indoors with a grow light or in a very bright southern facing window and cover the seeds with a plastic growing dome or plastic wrap to trap moisture.
This is why you will se wildly different price ranges for lemon grass seeds. The West Indian tends to be quite a bit more expensive.
This is for 20 organic, Non GMO seeds.
Hardy to zones 9-11, I have heard of people growing it year round in zone 8. It can be grown as an annual in colder climates and seeds can be collected for planting the following spring.
