Penstemon whippleanus, also known as Whipple's Penstemon, Dusky Penstemon or Dusky Beardtongue, is a perennial wildflower native to the western United States. It normally grows in high-altitude meadows and open forests, and does well in well draining and rocky soils.

The plant produces tubular, dark purple to maroon flowers that attract pollinators like bees and particularly hummingbirds. Its height ranges from 12 to 24 inches, and it is often used in alpine or rock gardens due to its cold tolerance and attractive blooms.

It is native to very particular states, there are only seven of them, including:
Arizona
Colorado
Idaho
Montana
New Mexico
Utah
Wyoming

Perennial zones 4-7

Like most cooler climate perennials, it requires a period of cold to break dormancy. This can be achieved by sowing the seeds outdoors in fall/winter or simulating these conditions in your refrigerator by folding the seeds into a moist paper towel and sealing it in a ziploc bag and placing it in your refrigerator for 4-6 weeks, then remove and sow when temps are between 60 and 70 degrees.
