The 1500-year-old cave bean is an heirloom variety of pole bean that have a fascinating backstory and a reputation for their resilience and productivity. These beans were discovered in a sealed clay pot within a cave in the southwestern United States, believed to have been left there by indigenous peoples over 1,500 years ago. There were no known varieties of this species currently growing at the time, to anyone's knowledge, so they were basically unknown to exist by those alive at the time. When the beans were planted, they remarkably germinated, proving their durability and viability even after centuries. Scientists believe that the fact that they were sealed and in the cool temperatures of a cave, certainly helped to preserve them.

These beans are known for their vigorous growth and high yields. They produce long, tender pods with seeds that are cream-colored with mottled purple markings. Please note that the beans pictured in photo 1, are fresh and when dried, (photo 2,) the beans turn more of a tan color with reddish-brown markings. The pods can be used as green beans when young or allowed to mature for dry shelling beans, which are excellent for soup and chili.

The plants have a climbing nature and can grow up to 8–10 feet tall, requiring sturdy trellises or poles for support. They thrive in well-draining soil, full sun, and moderate watering, making them adaptable to a variety of growing conditions. Gardeners prize the 1500-year-old cave beans not only for their productivity but also for their connection to history and their role in preserving ancient agricultural heritage.

Rich in flavor and nutrition, these beans are a testament to the ingenuity and agricultural skills of early people. They remain popular among heirloom enthusiasts and those seeking a direct connection to the past through their gardens.
