Astrantia major grows in color ranges of white, pink and green. This particular cultivar is white with delicate pink accents. Stunning! I first discovered these at my local Florist and used them in my smudge bundles, they dry SO perfectly!
They make for an excellent cut flower and I still have some dried ones that are a few years old and still look nearly like they did when fresh.
Obviously a beautiful flower in your garden as well, where you can grow them by the dozens.
Astrantia is a cool climate plant and likes part sun and moist soils rich in organic matter. It is native to the mountain meadows, woodland edges and stream banks of central and southern Europe, so it does best where summers stay cool and the soil never dries out. It is happiest in places like Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Ireland, the Pacific Northwest, Colorado (they are happily growing at the Denver Botanic Gardens,) New England, the upper Midwest and Canada, and it is cold hardy enough to shrug off long, freezing winters. In warmer areas, give it afternoon shade and keep it consistently moist.
Seeds can be planted in fall for a spring emergence or cold stratified in your refrigerator for 6 weeks. These take some patience as they can take anywhere from 1-6 months to germinate. Don’t throw out the pot or give up, they will come up with time. Just make sure the soil stays moist.
