Their tightly closed, pleated blooms cluster at the top of sturdy stems, giving the appearance of buds forever on the verge of blooming. Only bumblebees strong enough to pry the petals apart can access the nectar inside, making this plant a fascinating, specialized partner for these essential late season pollinators.
Growing 1 to 2 feet tall with glossy, deep green foliage, Bottle Gentian brings rich, vivid blue color to the garden right when most other blooms have faded, flowering from late summer into fall. Slow growing but long lived, this low maintenance native thrives in moist meadows, stream banks, and rain gardens, forming tidy, long lasting clumps once established. Naturally deer resistant, it pairs beautifully with other late season natives like New England Aster, Blue Lobelia, and Joe Pye Weed.

Growing Tips:
Bottle Gentian seeds require 8 weeks of cold stratification to germinate. The easiest method is to direct sow outdoors in fall or winter, allowing the natural cold of the season to do the work for you. Alternatively, fold seeds into a moist paper towel, seal in a labeled ziploc bag with the name and date, and place in your refrigerator for 8 weeks before sowing. After stratification, sow seeds on the soil surface, as light aids germination. Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart in full to part sun and consistently moist, well drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 2 through 6.
