You've probably heard the phrase “eat your weeds,” as of late. Well, you should. There’s a whole stockpile of edibles all around us(just make sure you look up which ones are safe to eat.)
Once thought of as undesirable, dandelions are now prized for their nutrition, medicinal value and for their ability to attract pollinators.
One of the best things you can do for bees, your garden and the environment is to create a safe haven and nectar supply.
I can’t help but notice that with the thousands of plants I have growing, I can always find the bees on “the weeds.” For years I pulled them. When I stopped, something amazing happened. The bees came in droves, set up camp and started pollinating EVERYTHING. Yes I have weeds, I also have more fruit, vegetables and flowers that I have ever been able to grow in the past.
“A weed is simply an undesirable plant” Anything can be categorized as a weed. Every plant serves a purpose, in my eyes, there are no weeds, they are simply (typically native) plants that grow in abundance because the they are well suited for the climate they are growing in.
We can get into invasive non natives but that’s a whole other subject and dandelions are certainly not invasive and absolutely essential.
Dandelions have numerous benefits.
Did you know that you can make a very nutritious salad out of the leaves? The leaves are packed with antioxidants.
THIS FLOWER SURPASSES ANY VEGETABLE IN ITS RICHNESS OF NUTRIENTS!
Dandelions contain:
minerals such as iron, zinc, boron, calcium, silicon,
