Devil’s Claw Seeds (Tufted Horned Rampion, Physoplexis comosa)

Grow one of the most unusual alpine flowers on earth with Devil’s Claw, also known as Tufted Horned Rampion. Tight, rounded clusters of 20 or more flowers appear in early to midsummer, each one a slender, bottle shaped bloom that fades from pale lilac at the base to deep, almost blackish purple at the tip. From the end of every flower, a twisted, forked purple style curls out like a tiny claw, which is how this plant earned its devilish name. It is a true showpiece that earns a double take from every visitor to your garden.

Native to the limestone Alps of northern Italy, Austria and Slovenia, including the Dolomites, Devil’s Claw grows wild in narrow crevices of sheer limestone cliffs, often in cool shade and at elevations up to about 6,500 feet, where its roots wedge into tiny cracks and anchor it to the rock. It is strictly protected by law in the wild in Italy and Austria, and it has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

A true rock garden gem, it stays tiny, about 4 inches tall, forming a tidy cushion of dark green, toothed leaves. It prefers gritty, sharply drained, lean alkaline soil and does best in full sun with a little shade during the hottest part of the day to prevent scorch. It is perfect for troughs, rock walls, crevice gardens, scree beds and containers. Protect it from winter wet and never let it sit in soggy soil. Hardy in zones 5 to 8, it is happiest in cool summers and can struggle in hot, humid ones. This is a slow growing plant, so expect it to take a few years to reach full size.

Because it is so compact, Devil’s Claw does beautifully in pots and troughs, but it is not a year round houseplant. It needs to spend winter outdoors or in an unheated, sheltered spot such as a cold frame, porch or garage with a window. Keep containers out of cold rain and snowmelt so the roots stay dry through winter, and in colder zones shelter or insulate the pot.

Cold stratification is required for these seeds to germinate. See the growing tips below.

Perennial zones 5-8

As always, every seed we offer is 100% non GMO. Whether heirloom, open pollinated, or hybrid, our seeds are never lab altered or genetically modified, just real seeds bred the traditional way.

Growing Tips:
Cold stratification is required. Sow seeds on the surface or just under it in a gritty, well drained seed starting mix, topped with a very thin layer of fine grit or vermiculite. Keep warm (about 64 to 72°F) and moist for 2 to 4 weeks. Then chill at 25 to 39°F for 4 to 6 weeks by sealing the pot in a ziploc bag in your refrigerator, or by leaving it in a cold frame or protected spot outdoors over winter. After chilling, do not move the pot straight into high heat. Keep it cool, around 41 to 54°F, even after sprouting begins. Germination can be slow and erratic, often 1 to 3 months or longer, so don’t throw out the pot or give up. Space plants 4 to 6 inches apart and transplant gently, as the roots dislike being disturbed.
