Electric Lemonade is a cross between Rubenza Cosmos and Apricot Lemonade Cosmos, and it takes the soft, sunny colors of Apricot Lemonade and turns up the voltage. The result is a bold, glowing mix of reds, fiery oranges, lemonade yellows, peaches, pinks, and hot pinks. Be sure to look through all the photos so you can see all the beautiful variations!
The real show is the ombre. Each bloom shifts from one color to the next, so a single flower can melt from lemon yellow into peach, then deep rose, then hot pink, or glow from fiery orange into red. With every imaginable combination appearing in the same patch, no two flowers are the same. They are bright, lively, and impossible to ignore, and they look like a sunset in bloom.
Electric Lemonade flowers heavily from early summer until frost, and the more you cut, the more it blooms. It makes spectacular bouquets and is a magnet for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Plant it in drifts for a fiery cottage garden border, a cutting garden, or a sunny meadow. It is an annual that reaches about 3 to 4 feet tall, with fine, feathery foliage. It thrives in full sun, heat, and average to poor soil, and too much fertilizer will only give you leaves.
Growing tips: Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost, when the soil is 65 to 75°F, pressing them in and covering them with about 1/4 inch of soil. They sprout in 7 to 10 days. For earlier blooms, start them indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost. Thin or space plants about 12 inches apart, and pinch young plants for a bushier shape. Deadhead often to keep the flowers coming.
