NIGHT BLOOMING CEREUS

Selenicereus grandiflorus is a sprawling, epiphytic cactus native to the Caribbean and parts of Central America, where it climbs through trees and rocky outcroppings in humid, tropical conditions. Its stems are slender and ribbed, armed with small spines, and in cultivation it can reach considerable length given something to scramble against. The flowers — white, heavily fragrant, and up to twelve inches across — open for a single night only, making each bloom an event rather than a backdrop. Grown as a container specimen in temperate climates, it rewards patient gardeners with one of the more singular flowering experiences in cultivation.
