Palmer’s Penstemon (Penstemon palmeri) also known as wild snapdragon, is one of the most dramatic and fragrant native penstemons of the western U.S., producing tall spires of pale pink to lavender tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds, native bees, and butterflies. This upright perennial grows 3 to 6 feet tall and thrives in hot, dry climates. Its broad, bluish-green leaves and thick, waxy stems help it conserve moisture, making it ideal for xeriscapes, wildflower gardens, and restoration plantings. Found naturally in desert canyons, foothills, and disturbed areas between 3,000 and 7,000 feet, it is well-suited to arid and semi-arid conditions.

This penstemon is highly drought-tolerant and best suited for gardens with good drainage and plenty of sun. It may behave as a biennial or short-lived perennial in hot lowland zones but readily self-sows where happy.

These wildflowers are native to:
California
Nevada
Utah
Arizona
New Mexico
Colorado
Idaho

To break seed dormancy and improve germination rates, Penstemon palmeri seeds benefit from a cold-moist stratification period of 4–6 weeks at 34–40°F.

You can do this in your refrigerator, using either of the two methods below:
Place the seeds in a damp paper towel or mix them with moist sand or vermiculite, then seal them in a labeled plastic bag and refrigerate at 34–40°F for 4 to 6 weeks. The paper towel should be moist but not dripping, and if using sand, keep it lightly damp. Check weekly for mold or early sprouting. After stratification, sow the seeds about ⅛ inch deep in well-drained soil at 60–70°F and keep moist until germination, which typically takes 10 to 21 days.
