Red Pussytoes, Mountain Everlasting (Antennaria dioica 'Rubra')
One of the most whimsical and underused ground covers in cultivation, Antennaria dioica 'Rubra', Red Pussytoes, is a low-growing, mat-forming evergreen perennial that earns its charming common name from clusters of fuzzy, rounded flower heads that look uncannily like the tiny toes of a cat's paw. The 'Rubra' cultivar takes this already delightful plant and supercharges it with deep cherry-pink to rosy-red blooms far more saturated and striking than the pale pink of the straight species, making it a genuine showstopper in the rock garden, between stepping stones, or spilling over a stone wall.
Native to cool mountain grasslands and dry pastures across Europe and northern Asia, this tough little perennial thrives exactly where most plants give up, in poor, dry, gritty, or rocky soil with sharp drainage and full sun. Drought tolerant once established, it forms a beautiful, slow-spreading silver-gray carpet of soft, spoon-shaped woolly leaves just 2-4 inches tall, sending up slender stems to 4-10 inches in late spring to early summer topped with those irresistible rosy-red blooms.
Incredibly versatile and virtually maintenance-free, no deadheading required, tolerates light foot traffic, deer resistant, and evergreen through all four seasons. An outstanding host plant for the American Painted Lady butterfly, it provides valuable early-season nectar for pollinators just as the garden is waking up. Equally at home as a small-scale lawn substitute between pavers, a rock garden feature, a border edging, or a container plant.

Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow in fall
Surface sow, press seeds lightly into moist soil, do not cover
Best germinated cool, soil temps around 55-60°F are ideal. Starting seeds in a cold frame or cool garage rather than a warm indoor space often improves results
Keep consistently moist but not wet throughout germination
