Another must have for me! Not actually a dandelion but has all the characteristics, the flowers (except pink), the leaves, the ease of growing, the health benefits and even the seed heads are the classic "make a wish" and blow.
The actual name is Rose Maiden (how elegant and regal! Ha!), Pink Hawksbeard or Crepis Rubra. The flowers and leaves are edible and make for a beautiful and nutritious salad. It also makes for a beautiful garnish to a fruit salad.
It is is a very rare plant to find in the US. It is believed to have originated in Greece and is also found in Italy. It is very attractive and beneficial to bees, who will choose it first over many other flowering plants.
A really unusual fact about this plant is that for some people, it smells fresh and grassy, to other it has a strong perfume smell. Did you know that there is a human gene that is responsible for a certain smell that is detected in Cilantro? People with the gene describe the herb as having an earthy and unpleasant smell and taste, these people tend to not like cilantro. People that don't have the gene cannot detect this and tend to love cilantro. Fascinating huh? It explains the love or hate relationship that people have for cilantro. I suspect that this is a similar case although the smell and taste of this plant is not unpleasant to anyone, some are just fortunate enough to smell the wonderful fragrant aroma. I can smell it and I don't like cilantro! Interesting.
These tend to like rocky soils but will grow virtually anywhere when temperatures are right. They are annuals that readily re-seed with the wind, just like dandelions, but you will not be displeased with this plant popping up here and there, it is highly prized wherever it grows. There is nothing undesirable or weed like about this plant. They are a beautiful shade of pink with hot pink centers.
This is for 20 organic seeds. Annual zones 3-10 although tends to re-seed.
