Saffron crocus bulbs give rise to beautiful, purple to violet flowers with distinctive red-orange stigmas, which are the saffron threads used for spice.
The flowers appear in the fall, typically in October or November, depending on the climate.
Saffron crocus bulbs are planted in the late summer or fall to allow them to bloom in the following autumn. They require well-draining soil and a sunny location to thrive. Proper care, including dividing and replanting bulbs every few years, can help maintain healthy saffron crocus plants and a steady saffron harvest.
The most valuable part of the saffron crocus is its red-orange stigma, which is collected by carefully plucking them from the flowers.
Each saffron crocus flower produces only a few delicate saffron threads, making saffron one of the most expensive and sought after spices in the world.
