SERVICEBERRY

Amelanchier alnifolia, the Saskatoon serviceberry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to western and central North America, where it grows at woodland edges, along stream banks, and across open prairie. In spring it produces clusters of white flowers before the leaves fully emerge, followed by small, sweet berries that ripen to deep purple-blue by midsummer. Birds find the fruit irresistible, making this an exceptional plant for wildlife gardens. The foliage turns warm shades of orange and red in autumn, extending its seasonal interest well beyond the harvest.
