Eriogonum umbellatum, commonly known as Yellow Sulfur or Sulphur Flower, Yellow Sulfur Buckwheat or Umbrella Plant, is a cold hardy perennial plant native to western North America, particularly in mountainous and arid regions like the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada, and the Great Basin.

It is specifically native to: AZ , CA , CO , ID , MT , NM , NV , OR , UT , WA , WY

The plant produces vibrant yellow to sulfur-colored flowers in a characteristic umbrella-shaped cluster. These blooms appear from late spring through summer, often turning shades of red or orange as they age.

The leaves are grown near the ground in a rosette formation. The leaves are often covered in fine hairs, giving them a somewhat silvery appearance.

It is highly drought tolerant and thrives in dry, rocky soils and nutrient-poor soils, is found in open meadows, slopes, high desert and sagebrush areas, often at elevations from 4,500 to 12,000 feet. It is a fantastic xeriscaping plant, tolerating both cold and extreme heat, even exceeding 100 degrees, as long as conditions are arid. They are not adapted to humidity.

It typically grows between 12 to 18 inches tall, forming a low, mat-like structure with dense foliage.

It is a very important plant for native pollinators, supporting local ecosystems

The seeds require 6-8 weeks of cold weather to break dormancy, as is typical for cooler climate perennials. They can be sown in fall/winter, for a spring emergence or these conditions can be simulated in your refrigerator, by folding the seeds into a moist paper towel and sealing in a ziploc bag and then placing them in your refrigerator for 6-8 weeks, then sow when temperatures are between 65 and 75 degrees.

This is for 200 seeds
